Stock trading, information production, and executive incentives

چکیده
This paper investigates the effect of stock market microstructure on managerial compensation schemes. We propose and empirically demonstrate that the sensitivity of chief executive officer’s (CEO’s) compensations to changes in stockholders’ value is higher when the stock market facilitates the production and aggregation of private or public information. Using stock trading data and analysts’ earnings forecast data, we construct five different measures of the information content in stock prices. These measures, separately and jointly, account for the cross-sectional variations in CEO pay-performance sensitivity well. Our results are robust to the choice of samples, incentive measures, model specifications, and estimation methods. We extend the analysis to nonCEO executives and executive teams and find similar results. JEL Classification: D80; G14; G34; J33

Information-Based Stock Trading, Executive Incentives, and the Principal-Agent Problem
We examine the role of information-based stock trading in affecting the risk-incentive relation. By incorporating an endogenous informed trading into an optimal incentive contracting model, we analytically show that, apart from reducing incentives, a greater risk increases the level of information-based trading which consequently enhances executive incentives and offsets the negative risk-incen...

I n this paper, trading symbols of the 30 largest companies listed in the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE) were ranked based on the asymmetry information risk. Using the Ersan and Alici (2016) modified clustering algorithm (EA), we estimated the probability of informed trading (PIN) to measure the asymmetry information among traders for each trading symbol and trading day through two-year...
متن کاملIncentives of stock option based compensation
We introduce explicitly the effort as a choice variable in a continuous time utility maximisation framework of an executive who is partly compensated with stock options. We solve the model in the case where the executive is not allowed to trade in the company’s stock but is able to achieve a partial insurance through trading in a correlated market portfolio. We define the executive’s value of t...
متن کاملStock Trading, Information Production and Incentive Pay∗
This paper examines under what circumstances the market-based compensation scheme is effective in inducing managers’ incentives. We combine the optimal contract theory with the market microstructure literature and endogenize both the optimal compensation scheme and the stock market equilibrium. We analytically show that the incentive pay works better in a more efficient (or more informative) st...
